The old guard of rock‘n’roll, Ireland’s U2 charge their politically conscious and spiritual songwriting with an arena-sized rock sound. Arriving in the post-punk era, their Steve Lillywhite–produced debut album, 1980’s Boy, unveiled an energy that fueled them on to become one of the most popular—and lasting—rock bands of their time. Their fifth album, 1987’s The Joshua Tree—produced by Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois—delivered three timeless singles: “With or Without You,” “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For,” and “Where the Streets Have No Name,” and won the Grammy for Album of the Year. The combination of Bono’s rasped voice, Edge’s hard-edged guitar, and Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr.’s bracing rhythms continued a prolific output that has sustained them for over 30 years. Their 14th studio album, Songs of Experience, arrived in 2017.
