Beck Hansen exploded from the underground into the mainstream with his hit single “Loser” in 1994. With its downer anthem of a chorus, a lo-fi slide guitar loop, and some non-sequitur hip-hop verses, Beck introduced himself as a Los Angeles eccentric capable of sliding between genres while maintaining a surreal and dark sense of humor. He proved his talent and longevity on career milestones like 1996’s groundbreaking pop collage Odelay, 1999’s funk odyssey Midnite Vultures, and 2002’s brooding folk classic Sea Change. His 2014 album Morning Phase, which further explored Sea Change’s majestic balladry, received the Grammy Award for Album of the Year.
