Production has begun on the fifth and, apparently, final season of Stranger Things. Netflix announced the news today with a cast photo (above), confirming last month’s reports that the show would get back under way in January.

Though series creators the Duffer Brothers announced in early 2022 that the show would film, and conclude with, a fifth season for Netflix, production was delayed for more than seven months due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. “Writing does not stop when filming begins,” the brothers wrote during the strikes last May. “While we’re excited to start production with our amazing cast and crew, it is not possible during this strike. We hope a fair deal is reached soon so we can all get back to work. Until then—over and out. #wgastrong.”

The new season is unlikely to air before 2025, Variety notes. Executive producer Shawn Levy described the fifth season to Total Film last year as “major, major, cinematic storytelling that happens to be called a TV series,” adding that it “is as big as any of the biggest movies that we see.”
